Grosse Ile Football Finishes 10-3

Grosse Ile squared off against Marine City in the Division 4 semi-final game (played at Birmingham Groves) for a spot in the finals at Ford Field. The Devils have worked their way through three other opponents in the playoffs this year after completing a very impressive two-loss regular season.

Football playoffs are different than other sports, mostly because there is so much time between the contests. Other sports may play only a few days later as they move through their tournament bracket. Not football. That week includes another Monday practice, another team meal, one more walk-through and another game day morning routine. The school and community have another week to anticipate the upcoming game, driving the collective spirit.

On Saturday, Grosse Ile face the undefeated Marine City Mariners. At this point in the season there are no easy games, no slouch opponents, no easy solutions. Grosse Ile is a very good football team. They ran into an opponent that was better than them on Saturday, losing 45-6.

So, Marine City moves on and Grosse Ile goes home as one of the top 4 teams in Division 4. It seems like ages ago (15 weeks to be sure) that the Devils were running drills in the heat of the summer sun. Going home is disappointing so it’s important to remember the many, many successes this team has enjoyed since early August.

Congratulations to the Grosse Ile community and school. You should be proud of the accomplishments of this athletic team.

Grosse Ile Defeats Pennfield, 18-13 to win Regional Title!

The Grosse Ile football team traveled to Battle Creek to take on Pennfield in the Regional game on Saturday. That’s a two plus hour bus ride…one way.

One way the Devils are going is to the Semifinal game in Division 4 on Saturday, November 19th where they will take on Marine City (12-0) at Birmingham Groves HS, 1pm. The winner moves on to the state finals Saturday, November 25th at Ford Field.

Grosse Ile (10-2) defeated Pennfield (11-1) 18-13 behind a very solid defensive game and survived a last ditch effort by Pennfield to win the game on a fourth down play from GI’s 5 yard line.

Congrats to the Grosse Ile football team and best of luck this week!

Grosse Ile Football Team Moves On!

The Grosse Ile football team has made the playoffs this year; their first time back since 2004.

Led by a stingy defense (188 points allowed this season), the Devils are making a path to bigger and better things.

Detroit Douglass (9-2) proved to be no match for Grosse Ile, who won the District crown, 26-22. Grosse Ile pushed their record to 9-2 and now plays at Battle Creek Pennfield (11-0) on Saturday, November 12th at 1:00pm.

Go Devils!

Local Teams Survive and Advance

The rematch in the state playoffs was all set. Fordson (6-4) versus Dearborn (7-3). The Tractors went down early in the first half, 17-0. It looked like Dearborn was going to get their due, having lost to Fordson in the regular season in Week 5, 42-13.

Fordson battled their way back to earn a 34-31 win. They now move on to another week of practice and the District Final game against Cass Tech on Saturday, November 5th at 1:00pm.

Grosse Ile (8-2) made the state playoffs, their first visit back in ~ six years. On Friday night, Detroit Kettering came to the island for the state playoffs and left defeated, 42-6.

Grosse Ile now takes on Detroit Douglass (9-1), Friday November 4th at 7:00pm at Detroit Northwestern HS.

Good luck to both teams this week in the District final games!

Survive, and advance!
